The DeskJet 722C was a wildly successful printer for HP. Many millions of them were sold between 1998 and 2000. (The 722C is essentially the same printer as the DeskJet 720C.) See specification table below. This remains one of the best color printing solutions available today. The suggested retail price was originally $377. The actual street price varied between $249 and $299.

The print quality of the 722C/720C is superior to the 400, 500, 600, 820/850, 1200, and 1600 series printers, even though not quite as good as the latest 900 series. The 722C's tricolor cartridge has a higher frequency (12 KHz) and fires much smaller ink droplets than any previous printer, which lets the machine lay down far more drops per pixel, expanding the range of colors that can be printed without halftoning. HP calls it Photo Resolution Enhancement technology II (PhotoREt II), and it was originally developed for the 722C. What it means to you is that the 722C can produce 30 times the number of colors of these other printers, with more color depth and brilliance, even on plain paper. On HP's Premium Photo Paper, or the Deluxe Photo Paper developed by HP & Kodak (together with a special set of color-matching tables in the printer driver), the results are spectacular.

Of course, the 722C/720C also incorporates HP ColorSmart II, which recognizes text and graphical page elements to ensure perfect printing every time by automatically adjusting settings. It also contains a number of other features, such as "Smart Focus", which automatically sharpens images such as those found on the Internet and on CDs, to give you the best prints possible from such low resolution images.

The 722C/720C prints up to eight pages per minute in black and four pages per minute in color. Plus, you can print on a wide variety of paper types including plain and premium papers, transparencies, envelopes, cards, labels, banners (a special banner printing mode is provided), specialty photo papers and iron-on transfers.
