GENERAL INFORMATION
The Hewlett Packard LaserJet IID, a PCL level 4 language printer, is based on the Canon RX engine. This engine is capable of duplex printing (both sides of the paper), hence II"D" for Duplex. The LaserJet IID has 14 built-in fonts, which is eight more than the Series II. Most font cartridges for the II are useable in the IID, but emulation cartridges are not. The video interface that comes with the JetScript for the Series II will not work in a IID. The video interfaces that come with LaserMaster controllers and others that access only the video lines will work in the II or the IID. The cover set is the same shape as that of the Canon LBP-8IIR, but the color is a shade lighter.
This diagram shows how paper is fed through a duplex printer system.
FONT INFORMATION
The LaserJet IID was the first HP printer to include the ability to rotate fonts from portrait to landscape. Earlier printers had to have the fonts bitmapped in each form. Cartridges such as the HP ProCollection have Helvetica and Times Roman programmed in portrait orientation only, and that's the only way they work in the original LaserJets and Series II. These fonts can be used in both portrait and landscape orientation on the IID and on newer HP printers such as the IIP and III. See the HP Font Cartridge page for more information.
REFURBISHED PRINTERS AVAILABLE
The HP LaserJet IID has been discontinued, but The Printer Works can build them from parts at special request. Refurbished printers are in like-new condition and come with a full-one-year warranty. For a price quote, select the printer's part number in the ordering information table.

The IID is the first LaserJet to use a controller designed and manufactured by HP rather than by Canon. The style of the board fabrication is typical of HP and not Canon. Traces are gold plated and they make sharp 90 degree bends. These characteristics have been a trademark of boards designed and built by HP. Manufacturing cost was reduced by combining into a large ASIC many of the TTL parts found on Canon designs. Incorporation of this chip protects the board design from copying and makes repairs difficult for board repair houses who do not have access to spare ASICs.

The HP LaserJet IID uses the same toner cartridges as all other SX-based printers.

FONT CARTRIDGES
There are many font cartidges made by HP for the HP LaserJet family. When you want to increase your printer font collection, see our catalog page on Font Cartridges from Hewlett-Packard.
PAPER HANDLING
The LaserJet IID printer uses the same shaped paper trays and high-capacity feeders as all other SX-based printers. All versions are physically interchangeable, but there are slight color differences. (See also Diagram 300.)
You can also buy third party high-capacity feeders for paper or envelopes, as well as an output stacker, to add productivity to SX, RX and TX printers. The sheet feeders can hold up to 1500 sheets; the envelope feeder up to 250 envelopes. The stacker extends your printer's output hopper, allowing it to stack up to 500 sheets. The IID uses the same RAM expansion boards as the Series II and there is only one RAM expansion slot. Compatible memory boards are listed below. Interestingly, the IID accepts the same PostScript cartridges as the IIP and the III, but IIP and III memory boards will not work in the IID.
CONTROLLER UPGRADE OPTIONS
The LaserJet IID controller does not have as many upgrade options as the LaserJet
II or III. PostScript can be added with the PostScript Emulation cartridges
from HP, Pacific Data Products or UDP. To improve print quality, the controller
can be exchanged for a LaserJet III/IIID controller (LaserJet III/IIID
use same board). With a LaserJet IIID controller there are many excellent scalable
type cartridges available.
Note regarding memory and the controller upgrade: If you purchased
extra memory for your HP II/IID, which comes with only .5 MB on board, please
remember that this extra memory will not work with the III/IIID controller.
However, the III/IIID board does come with 1MB of memory standard.
If you want more than that, you will need to buy III/IIID
compatible RAM. You can add up to 4MB to the III/IIID controller board,
which gives you two RAM expansion slots. But the II/IID printers only have
one memory access panel, while the original III and IIID printers have
two access panels. If you expand your RAM using a single 4MB RAM board,
this will not matter. But if you want to expand the memory using two equal RAM
boards to reach the maximum 4MB, you will have to remove the printer's bottom
panel to access the second memory slot on your new controller. Therefore, it
would be easiest to install a two-board RAM expansion at the same time as the
new controller board.
OTHER OPTIONS
The LaserJet IID can have an automatic envelope feeder attached to feed up to 50 envelopes at a time. It is shown here. The envelope feeder of the IID receives power and control signals from the DC Controller via a round hole in the bottom case.
NOTE: LaserJet IID envelope feeders are not interchangeable with IIID envelope feeders. The external cable connection system has been replaced with a connector above the upper paper tray and the wires are routed to the DC Controller internally, rather than externally. Also, the physical mounting system has been changed. The IIID envelope feeder has snap-in rods rather than hooks to hold the feeder to the face of the printer.
