GENERAL INFORMATION

The CXD engine was introduced in 1985, after the CX. Canon corrected all of the major complaints people had regarding the CX, but the resultant printer was so big and heavy it didn't have the same appeal to users that the compact CX had enjoyed. QMS, Imagen and Electronic Forms Systems were the only significant marketers of products incorporating the CXD VDO model, and they did not sell huge quantities. The two major CX problems corrected by Canon were the small input tray and the face-up output. CXD printers have two paper trays. Each holds up to 250 sheets, giving the printer a total of 500 sheets. Canon designed a clever paper output mechanism that can stack its output face-up or face-down. The CXD also has a 20 mm side-shifting jobber mechanism built-in. We have noticed that on average, CXD printers print a bit darker from the factory than most CX printers. Perhaps Canon decided to crank up the power to the laser diode just a bit to produce more solid black areas.

TONER

The Canon LBP-CXD-VDO printers use the same toner cartridges as all other CX-based printers.

PAPER HANDLING

The LBP-CXD-VDO printers use the same shaped paper trays as all other CXD-based printers. All versions are physically interchangeable, although there may be slight color differences. (See also Diagram 301.)
